Spooky Drippy Halloween Candles!

In between school and taking care of that house/dog/husband (yes, in that order!) I have been working non-stop to get our home into the Halloween spirit!  I really loved the idea of having drippy candles that look like they have been lit for FOREVER on my mantle.  I searched high and I searched low and came to the conclusion that a tutorial for these things did not exist!  So, what did I do?  I made my own (and took pictures like any good blogger should!)!

These were really cheap and easy to make!

Supplies that you are going to need:

A Pot

Wax Tarts

Pillar Candles

Wax paper

Tinfoil

Spoon/Scooper

All of my supplies came from my kitchen or the dollar store.  I did however get an old pot from the thrift store.  I think it cost me around $2.50.

Gather all of your materials and take a pretty picture:

I got the pillar candles and the wax tarts at the dollar store in the candle/fragrance aisle.  There are three tarts in a pack, so I just winged it and bought two packages thinking that would be enough.  If you want, you could even use old candles that are too short to burn or candles that you just don't want anymore a.k.a., the is a great way to guiltlessly get rid of your old candles that you can't bring yourself to throw out.  I wanted mine to be white (although they are kinda off-white) so I went ahead and bought some new ones.

You want to make sure that before you do anything you wrap up the wicks of the candles.  I wrapped mine in tinfoil and it seemed to work fine.  If you don't, you are likely to pour wax all over the wick, making the candle unburnable (yes, I just made that word up, and no, I did not learn this from experience.....).

Next you are going to make a double boiler using your pot that you don't care about getting wax all over and another pot big.  Make sure that it is large enough to place the wax-burning pot in it.  Bring some water to a boil and add the wax tarts you got into the upper, wax-melting, pot.  Once the water boils, you can bring the temperature down.

***Warning: melting wax is VERY dangerous and should be done VERY carefully.

Once the wax is melted, turn the burner off.  For some reason, my wax looks green in the picture....

Slowly pour the wax onto the pillar candles.  For this, I used an old coffee scoop that I found in my junk drawer.  Make sure that whatever surface you are working on is covered in wax paper.  Dried wax on countertops = bad.

The longer the wax has been off the heat, the easier it is to control.  Keeping that in mind, don't let it sit too long to the point where it hardens and you have to repeat the melting process all over again.  I would say to wait a good 20 seconds and your drips will be perfect.  Have fun with it.  The will not and should not look perfect!

Here they are on my Halloween mantle during the day.  I love them!

Here they are at night!  So spooky!

I hope everyone enjoyed the tutorial!  Be on the lookout next week for some halloween decorations my hubby and I plan on making this weekend!

Halloween Wreath

Everyone and their momma is making fall/halloween wreaths this season.  After sporting my cute summer wreath for four months, I decided it was time for a change.  I set out to the craft store and dollar store and came up with this beauty!

Disregard the glare: clearly my windows are clean.

I call this wreath my 'mummy halloween wreath'.  I did not take pictures of the process (but really, there doesn't need to be any this wreath is so simple!).  Blogger fail.

Start by getting a wreath from the craft store.  I tend to get the cheap straw ones as opposed to the foam forms.  They are SUPER expensive.

Take a piece of muslin and make a tiny snip at the edge of the seam.  Make sure that the cut runs with the grain of the fabric.  Rip away!  Using this technique makes this part go really quickly, the strips are straight, and you don't spend hours cutting.

Wrap the strips around the wreath, tacking them at the back of the wreath using your hot glue gun (this is obvi the mummy part).

I made some cute rosettes out of felt in colors that I thought were halloweeny, and made some halloween bunting.  Attaching all of the decorative elements, including a dollar store crow, finished off the look.

Lastly, I took some dollar store spider web cotton stuff (that's what I am calling it, get over it) and strategically placed it on the wreath to give it that spooky effect!  Hang the wreath, stand back, and enjoy!

Did you create a fall/halloween wreath this year?

Okay, No Really, We're Back!

Fail.

Thanks everyone for hanging in there.  Things have been a little crazy since the wedding with law school starting up, another wedding coming up, and a TON of DIY craftiness.  BUT, I am here to tell ya'll that we are officially back and better than ever!

Because I left everyone hanging on what our wedding was actually like.  I decided that the first post back would be my last wedding one.  All images are courtesy of the amazing KortneeKate Photography.  She and her adorable husband Ted shot our wedding photos and did a fantastic job!  Why don't I just let the pictures speak for themselves? Warning, post is VERY photo heavy!

My soon to be husband being all cute while getting ready.

The all love each other

THE dress!

I hand stitched APK into my dress for my hubby and my 'something blue'.

I told my stylist to make me look like a 'hippie goddess'.  I think she got it down!

I told him I wouldn't shove the cake in his face.  Opps, I lied.

We're Back!

Remember that thing I said I was going to do in my last post?  Well, we did it!  Everything went amazingly well, the ceremony was beautiful, the toasts were amazing, and the drinks and dancing flowed!  I think everyone had a really great time!

Alex and I are over the moon about finally becoming husband and wife.  We have officially gotten our marriage license back from the county and I have filled out all the paperwork necessary to change my name!  I even took off the "cox" sticker on the mailbox yesterday, meaning that we are a house just of kings!  Addy is also very happy that her mommy finally has her last name.

The honeymoon was also fantabulous!  We had a great and relaxing time.  Once I get all of the pictures loaded and edited, I'll share!

Since we don't have any of our professional pictures yet, I'll leave you with a teaser from the photo booth that we had at the reception!

Last Night as a Single Lady

Well, it's finally here.  Tomorrow, in 95 degree weather, Alex and I are getting married.....outside.  We had a great rehearsal, an amazing dinner, and went out with some of our college friends.  After Lo's ID went missing and her iphone was stolen, we came home.  As soon as we walked in the door I knew there was a problem........

Addy and Buddy had pooped a RIVER of diarrhea.  So, in 20 years time, what will I be telling our friends and family?  "Well on the eve of my wedding, I was cleaning up river-like diarrhea :(  Boo!

Anyways, tomorrow is going to be wonderful.  Poop free.  And I'll be marrying my best friends.

See you on the flip side!

Jenny Craig Week VIII Weigh-In

Another week another pound and a half!  This puts me at around 17 pounds lost from the end of may until now!

My goal was to reach my half-way point (around 20 lbs.) by the time the wedding hit.  While I have not and will not accomplish this by Saturday, I am still very satisfied with my results, the weigh loss, and how I look.  I picked up the dress today and what a saga it has been.  I went into my first fitting and the seamstress could hardly do the dress up.  It was a RUDE awakening, partially prompting my pre and post wedding diet.  Every time I went back the dress kept getting looser and looser until finally, at my last fitting, she had to take it in an inch on both sides!  I went to go pick up the dress today and she looked beautiful and very tiny since being taken in.  I opted not to try on the dress one more time, and instead, the next time I put it on will be my wedding day.

In other news, it looks as though the wedding is going to be steamy HOT!  We ordered some huge fans to put around the reception space just to get the air moving a little bit.  Say a little prayer that there isn't a heat advisory this Saturday :(

Want a sneak preview of part of my wedding day look?  Okay here it is!

Anyone have any advice for a soon-to-be married couple?

Weight Loss Weigh-In Week VIII!

Weigh-in number seven was yesterday and it went great!  I lost another three pounds this week!  I am sooo surprised because this past weekend was my second bachelorette weekend!

To start the night we went to Nada, a mexican fusion restaurant downtown.  Not only did I eat FLOUR tortilla chips and guacamole to start, but I also DRANK two mojitos.  I then ate two of my three grilled chicken tacos.  Yum.

After dinner some of the ladies and I went to a local bar right across the street.  We sat outside, a good choice considering the theme of the bar is western, bull included.  I drank some more (rum and diet cokes) and people watched.

Alex picked us up and the bachelorette party pretty much ended at that point.  We went to a local bar down the street from our house and relaxed on the patio (while some drama ensued).

I would say that the party was a success, I got to eat something not on plan with JennyCraig and drink for the first time in months!  The best part?  No hangover (really)!

Despite last week's gluttony, I have managed to lose 16 lbs!  That's two more than the average bride loses and I still have one more week to go!

As always, FOLLOW MY BLOG!  The more followers, the better! (I'll be your best friend?).

Back Deck Staining Project

When we moved into our house a new deck had just been put on, but never stained.  We waited and waited, weeks and weeks for a 24 hour period of NO RAIN.  It took nearly two months, but we finally got cracking on staining the deck.

Here's the deck.  It's pretty standard, a little small, but it'll do just fine.

Notice the water?  I wasn't lying.  It rained A LOT this summer.

We picked a stain that was pretty natural looking.  I didn't want anything too red or too brown.  Notice our huge, oddly shaped/sloped yard?  It's a swampy situation.

Here comes the stain!

You have to start with the rails if you want to stain it all in one go.  Painting the posts, banister, whatever-you-call-its is the most time consuming part of the job.  Our deck is only about 120 square feet and this part took a good two hours.

After the posts were done, I painted the actual deck (while Alex pretended he was a photographer and snapped pictures of me painting.

Note: Do not use a roller to stain your deck.  You will get air bubbles in the stain and die.  In my defense, the roller was all Alex's idea.  Also, start your staining in one of the back corners and work your way to the front.  This ENSURES that you won't have to step on your work.

The finished project!  The deck is still wet in this picture.  The stain didn't dry this shiny.  The next weekend we purchased a new patio set and repositioned our grill to complete our outdoor living space!

While I was hard at work, Alex snapped some photos of the annuals in our yard.

Pretty, no?  the boy has skills.

Also, did I mention that my wedding present came early?  Well, it did and I have a brand spankin' new Canon EOS Rebel 2ti to prove it!

Isn't she pretty?

I think I'm in love!

Jenny Craig Weigh-In Week VI!

Hey there,

Another week, another weigh-in.  I am happy to say that despite my fried food binge, I lost 1 lb.  Chances are, I am still retaining a lot of water weight from all the salt and fat, so next week I (hopefully) will have a bigger drop.

Another pound brings me to a total of 13 lbs!

The wedding planning is going strong.  I have so much to do any only 2.5 weeks left to do it all!  I had my hair trial yesterday and I have my final dress fitting today.  I'll let you know how the arm-pit fat is coming along!

Jenny Craig Weigh-In Week V!

Well, as ya'll may be able to tell, Wednesdays are my standing Jenny Craig weigh-in days.  I went yesterday and after having what I call a "fat week" (just a week when I'm not feelin' the weight loss), I lost another solid 2 lbs!  This puts me down 12 lbs overall in a mere 5 weeks!  Yippee!

For those of you that like visuals, 12 lbs is:

ME

or,

Anyways, I have something to admit.  I haven't updated in the last week or so because......I SLICED MY FINGER OPEN. I'll spare everyone a photo of my frankenfinger.  All I was trying to do was make my hubby a yummy marinade.  Who knew scoring a lemon could be so deadly?  A trip to Emergency Care and two, TWO stitches later, I am proud to say that my left pointer finger is looking......gross.  I get the stitches out in a week or so, which means I only have two weeks for my poor finger to heal before the big day!  I might need someone to teach me how to strategically place my hands for the wedding :(.

Alex and I are going to GA for the 4th weekend.  We're taking Opie and Addy (it's her first time) for some fun in the sun and water!  Have a SAFE and happy holiday weekend.  And be careful using those knives!
